He was all in his tears. A man who had demonstrated tremendous character in grilling times on court and conquered the world with a tennis racquet in hand was crying like a child who’s forcefully taken away from his mother. Yes it was Pete Samprass, the snapshots are still fresh in our memory when he sat in his chair after his last match and wept covering his face. “Good bye” is one of the hardest things to say I felt, that too for one last time is even harder. And now its Dada’s turn to say it to all his fans and supporters the same two words- good bye. 1559_photo.jpg

He could’ve done it two years ago when he was sacked from the Indian cricket team and when that ugly episode of the spat with Greg Chappel consumed his stature. To him controversies were nothing new but this one along with the horrible run of form he was in, it was shutters closed as for as his cricketing carrier was concerned. It seemed like Ganguly would be either a coach or a commentator the next time we would be seeing him. But then it was the adversity that got the better out of him. He was not the one to give up. Like a true champion he battled his way through all the odds and demonstrated one of the most staggering comebacks in the history of cricket. Ganguly who was once welcomed with short pitched stuff every time he went out to bat made his comeback in the fast and bouncy pitches of South Africa. And from then on to two years down the lane he never looked back for once. And now when he lines himself up to play his last test series against the Aussies, every single game he leaves us with the impression that he is not finished yet!

Many say he is not the most elegant of batsman, his not the soundest of techniques, he not very swift between the wickets and he is not very athletic fieldsman to meet the international standards. Yes of course, I know we all have a bad habit of comparing him with Sachin and Rahul for elegance and technique. But still Saurav was Saurav all the way. He holds a record that would make anyone proud. With just his hand eye co-ordination and pure talent defining his batting craft he has over 17000 runs in international cricket. Moreover he has played at the highest level for almost 16 years since his debut in 1992. He played the game in the hard way. That itself is a greatest tribute to any player. ps.jpg

The “Prince of Calcutta” has had his share of ups and downs in his career like everybody has. He was a man of aggression and met fire with fire. He has been the most successful Indian captain and most charismatic of all Indian captains. He was a captain with far-sightedness and it was he who brought Yuvraj, Kaif, Sehwag, Zaheer, H.Singh into Indian team. Whenever India toured down under the entire Australian media would be activated just because of him. He was the one who played mind games with the aussies that too in their soil. He was the one who took his shirt off and made those open chested celebrations in England . Dada has left a lasting impression on Indian cricket and he will be missed for these things in the future.

There are many questions to be answered as he announces his retirement. His exclusion from the Irani cup was really unfair given any justification. Yet he decided to walk out on his own terms. He couldn’t have asked for a better time than the ongoing series. Breaking the Aussie supremacy in world cricket in a very convincing manner would be the most satisfying thing in his carrier. And as I complete this article Saurav completed his century in second test at Mohali. What a way to say goodbye to the Aussies!

For a player who has spent his entire life pursuing his love in the heat of expectations both by the people and the self, to wake up in the morning and think all those are a thing of past is a real hard feeling, how big or small the player might be in terms of numbers and statistics. Sometimes this sporting world would be a cruel place. You retire at a age when you actually start to mature. The time here is so short and the space here is so less. Well thats life isn’t it? When you say goodbye…..
