Love: the essence of life

What is this life if , full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare?

Decades ago when W.H.Davies wrote these lines, he was probably worried about the gradual disappearance of love among humans for each other. If he had lived unto this day, he would have buried himself to death unable to bear the question of what love is and if it really exists?

The growth of commercialization started asserting values to everything in the process of building a better civilization. Nature, love, selfless care were valued lower than that of fame, name, monetary success. Thus the craze of man to evolve as a more civilized being has blindfolded him to love. As a result of which, we have a crippled social being instead of a man with a lovely heart.

We have all agreed or are compelled to look at the world with an expectant view of life. There lies the basic problem. True love exists when there is a selfless goodness at heart. It is what a mother showers on her child, a true teacher on his student and two good friends between them!l13.png

The Bible says “Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us and his love is made perfect in us.” It is love for each one of our fellow beings, that has sustained life on earth.

I read in one of Paulo Coelho’s books about a girl in Brasilia who was brutally beaten by her parents and had lost the ability to move and speak. Once admitted to hospital, she was cared for by a nurse who said to her everyday: ‘ I love you.’ Although the doctors assured her that the child could not hear and that all her efforts were in vain, the nurse continued to say:’ I love you.’ Three weeks later the child recovered the power of movement. Four weeks later, she could again talk and smile. And Coelho ends this simple incident with one phrase: love cures.

It is love by which we need to stand, so as to make this place better for ourselves to live in. As Shakespeare said “like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, so do our minutes hasten to their end.” To add value and flavors to a life moving to its end, love towards each other would probably be the only recipe.
